What To Wear When Flying Commercial

Summer's coming up fast, and many people will be faced with traveling to another city, state, or even country. Whatever the case may be, if you're flying there, things can get a little overwhelming, what with keeping up with your flight schedules, dealing with security guidelines, and making sure you don't forget to pack anything.
I work in retail, selling women's clothing, and recently I've had a lot of ladies come in looking for clothes to take on their trip to wherever. They worry about what to pack and what to wear on the plane, and how to prepare if it's warm here and cold there, or any mix of the two. I always tell them the same thing: wear layers.
Layers are essential to making sure you're prepped to stay comfortable enough the entire flight. So now that we've answered the basic question, let's delve a little deeper. Thanks to AsterianBeauty, I can actually show you the basic concept of what I wear and explain how it helps me to get through my flying experience rather painlessly.
1. Layers
Wearing layers allows you to adjust for temperature. Always check the weather before deciding on your outfit.
If it's warm where you are, but cold where you're going, pack your coat and gloves in your checked bag. Trust me, you do not want to deal with lugging around your coat. You will lose it. Place your gloves in the pockets of your coat, roll your coat up, and place it near the handle so you don't have to open up your suitcase for all the airport to see. The airport you're flying to should have heat (fingers crossed), so it'll be easy to pick up your luggage, throw on your coat, and be on your way.
If it's cold where you are, and warm where you're going, do the exact opposite of the last tip. Wear your coat to the airport, and pack it once you get there.
If it's warm where you are, and warm where you're going, then don't worry about a coat and just make sure you're wearing a light cardigan in case the person next to you on the plane turns their little fan thing all the way up.
If it's cold where you are and cold where you're going, wear your coat to the airport, pack it, then get it back out at your destination.
I highly suggest always bringing a light cardigan or jacket because you never know what the airport and airplane will be like, and it's easier to stuff that in your carry-on than an enormous coat.
2. Simplicity
Keeping your outfit simple is the biggest key to getting through the airport (especially security) with minimal effort.
Wearing flats or other (comfortable) slip-on shoes will come in handy when going through security. This also applies to the cardigan, as it's easy to take off, ball up, and put in a bin.
Keep jewelry to a minimum, as larger pieces will definitely have to be removed. In my experience, though, small pieces can be kept on with no problem.
Most airlines allow 2 carry-on bags and one personal item. Purses count as a carry-on bag, so if you need 2 carry-on bags, leave enough room to pack your purse. Personal items include a book, your wallet, or really anything else you can carry on your person (in your pockets or in your hand).
Keeping to simplicity, though, I always carry a backpack and a purse on longer flights (2 or more hours) and just a purse on short flights (up to 2 hours). More on what to pack in a later post.
3. Comfort
Make sure you're comfortable! You've got a long day ahead of you, and a lot of walking. Make sure you can sit, walk, and run (just in case you're late or your layover flight is early!)
Keep in mind you'll also be sitting in very close quarters with strangers, so take into consideration their comfort as well. Make sure your clothes are freshly washed, shower the night before or the morning of your flight, and don't wear too much perfume/cologne. If you have longer hair, tie it up so it's not brushing their arm whenever either of you moves. Don't wear super jingly jewelry (I'm looking at you, bangles), and make sure you respect their space. Cross your fingers they'll do the same for you.
